Dr. Robin Tyler of DNREC, who did the testing, cited "results indicate a moderately eutrophic condition in Comegys Lake and highly eutrophic conditions in Silver Lake and Lake Gerar"…with…" high density of microscopic algae (phytoplankton), a condition which causes low water clarity." DNREC will test the lakes' water annually.
COAST DAY Coast Day, is typically the first Sunday in October. The 2010 date will be posted at the Coast Day link below. Annually SOLA3 hosts an exhibit at Coast Day, sponsored by the University of Delaware’s College of Marine and Earth Studies and the Delaware Sea Grant College Program. www.ocean.udel.edu/coastday/ Thousands of people attend the event in Lewes, DE, to experience the wonders of the sea and the importance of Delaware’s marine and coastal resources. SOLA3's exhibit provides history on the Rehoboth lakes and valuable education and information that encourage good stewardship.
WORKSHOP At the invitation of the City of Rehoboth, SOLA3 sponsored a full-day workshop to inform more than 65 residents and public officials about the current condition of the lakes and to acquaint everyone with simple things they can do to help protect water quality and promote a healthy biodiversity. John Hughes, Secretary of DNREC, noted in his keynote address that the lakes' health is precarious and pointed out how shallow the lakes are, which makes them especially vulnerable. Presentations by environmental and water experts provided valuable information on simple ways to preserve and maintain the lakes. SOLA3 presented Senator George Bunting and Representative Pete Schwartzkopf each with an Appreciation Plaque for co-sponsoring a resolution in the Delaware legislature naming the three lakes natural treasures to Delaware and the United States.
ANNUAL CLEANUP - Saturday May 22nd, 2010 from 9:00am until Noon The 2010 late cleanup is scheduled for Saturday May 22nd. In late spring or early summer, SOLA3 sponsors an annual lakes' cleanup where volunteers amass on foot and in boats to haul away piles of debris. Such "treasurers" as bicycles, tires and creosote soaked lumber have been removed from the lakes. This effort greatly improves the appearance of the lakes and removes non-biodegradable materials that can be harmful to wildlife. Billed as good, "clean" fun, everyone is treated to donuts and beverages.
OUTREACH SOLA3 partnered with the University of Delaware's Marine Studies program on a 2006 summer project with Upward Bound high school students to use satellite global positioning technology to map the storm drain discharge points for Silver Lake and Lake Gerar. The results are valuable in identifying the sources of run-off into the lakes. |
