"On these shores there are echoes of past and future; of the flow of time, obliterating yet containing all that has gone before – of the stream of life, flowing as inexorably as any ocean current, from past to unknown future."

CITY OF REHOBOTH BEACH RECEIVES 2010 CONSERVATION AWARD

The City of Rehoboth Beach was presented with SOLA3's 2010 Conservation Award at a Commissioners' meeting on August 20 at the City Hall. Mayor Sam Cooper accepted the award on behalf of the City. In presenting the specially designed award's plaque to the Mayor, Sallie Forman, SOLA3's President and Founder, said the City was being recognized for its exemplary achievement in voluntary conservation of its lakefront properties, that included creating natural riparian buffers at Lake Gerar in 2004; at City Park on Silver Lake in 2007; and restoring the 145 foot shoreline at Penn Street in 2010.
Mayor Cooper thanked SOLA3 for its leadership and said "It's always great when you have a citizens' group like this to work with to keep the fires going..."

Forman also recognized the City's Planning Commission for including SOLA3's recommendations for lake preservation and conservation in its 2010 Comprehensive Development Plan, which was adopted by the City. Todd Fritchman, President of Envirotech Consulting, Inc., worked for the City on all these projects. He showed pictures of the City's shoreline improvements to demonstrate the beauty and practicality of natural riparian buffers.

SOLA3's first Conservation Award was presented to John Hall and Tom Childers in 2009 for conservation of their shoreline at 124 Lake Drive.

Coast Day 2010

SOLA3 Vice President, Mike Boyd is shown (below) handing out literature at the University of Delaware's Coast Day. The event is held every year, in early October. The rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of visitors coming out to the event and stopping by the SOLA3 booth for information on Saving Our Lakes.

Rehoboth Fifth Graders Learn Lessons about the Lakes

Over 100 Rehoboth Beach Elementary fifth graders braved a chilly October day on the banks of Silver Lake, behind their school, to participate in a hands-on, inquiry based educational activity to learn about the ecology and organisms of Lake Gerar and Silver lake. These classes were underwritten by SOLA3 and as a way to educate and engage future generations. The full story, pictures and article by Rehoboth Beach Elementary 5th grade science teacher Jacquie Kisiel can be found in our newsletter.
